Passion for helping
A positive attitude brings rewards for Hannah-Bella Stacey, Director and business partner of The Hyper Room Hypoxi Health Spa. Recently she shared her story with the weekender.
What job did you dream of growing up?
I was always changing my mind. My earliest dream was a garbage collector; that dream died when you no longer got to ride on the back of the truck. I changed a lot all through my years growing up but in Grade 11 and 12 I wanted to be a make-up artist.
Is this what you pursued after school?
I spent a year contemplating what it was I thought I might want to do for the rest of my life. There is so much pressure to know from such a young age what career you want to follow when in reality you have not even had a chance to discover your individual personality away from your peers at school. Still, with the idea of pursuing beauty of some sort, I attended an information day at the Australian College of Natural Medicine and happened to walk past an information seminar about the holistic counselling course. My mind was made up there and then. I was the youngest in my class by about 10 years but the influence and support from my classmates gave me confidence to be myself.
How did your career unfold?
I spent the next seven years working part-time for health professionals in fields such as naturopathy and gyms, all the while running my own home-based counselling business.
How did you come to set up The Hyper Room?
It was one of those times when everything just fell into place so easily we knew it just had to be right. It’s a rather long story, but let’s just say when everything aligns, like it did for us on this journey, you have to take the plunge. The biggest motivation was we would be the first people to bring Hypoxi targeted fat and cellulite reduction to the Sunshine Coast. With such a great product with proven success, and all the other health services we had on board, we knew we couldn’t fail.
You run the business with your mother, Treena. How important is the family dynamic to success? I have always had a very close relationship with both my parents, and family is hugely important to me. I think the point of difference with working with Mum is you genuinely and wholeheartedly care for, and know, that person and each other’s strengths and weaknesses. We support each other, which reflects on the business, and clients tend to really enjoy the diversity between the two of us.
What is a typical day like?
Waking up at 5.30am to be ready to begin the work day at 6.30am. Most days it is fairly consistent with clients right through until 6.30pm. I love going to work. Our clients are lovely and we spend a lot of time laughing and genuinely caring for each person as an individual. We also offer so many services you never get bored from doing the same thing.
What are the best and worst parts of the job?
The best parts far outweigh the worst. First and foremost the best part are the clients. Helping people on a journey to better health and self-esteem — what could be more rewarding than that? Always researching to find the best products or services available is very exciting also. The worst part? As with any business, you do have your quiet times and maintaining a positive attitude when so many are talking doom and gloom can be tricky.
What are your personal and professional goals for the next five years? I am very much looking forward to starting a family and am so fortunate to have my mum and great staff so I will be able to juggle my career and home life quite easily. Professionally we would like to expand to be able to really assist others less fortunate. It sounds like a cliche but it is truly where our passion lies.
